Clinical Skills Trainer. Medical Education, Royal Papworth Hospital

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the progressive and innovative Medical Education team at Royal Papworth Hospital as a Clinical Skills Trainer. We are seeking a highly motivated and well organised clinical professional who brings strong practical abilities and a genuine passion for teaching clinical skills. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic educational environment and is committed to supporting the development of future medical professionals.

About the Role

As a Clinical Skills Trainer, you will work closely with a multi disciplinary team of Clinical Educators and Medical Education Teaching Fellows to deliver high quality clinical skills training for undergraduate medical students from the University of Cambridge. You will play an important role in shaping the learning experience of students in Years 4, 5, and 6, helping them develop the competence and confidence needed for safe and effective clinical practice.

Our programmes make extensive use of medical simulation and involve working with simulated models as well as real patients. Experience in simulation based education is welcome but not essential.

The post offers opportunities for professional development in education, simulation, and assessment.

### Main duties of the job

Teach and assess a broad range of core skills such as vital signs measurement, venepuncture, urinary catheterisation, arterial blood gas sampling, peak flow measurement, Basic Life Support etc. Training provided where needed.

Deliver structured practical skills teaching in both simulation environments and clinical settings, ensuring sessions are engaging, safe and aligned with curriculum expectations. Simulation based training involves using task trainers/models, mannikins, and ward based scenarios.

Support supervised practice by guiding students through hands on learning, offering formative assessment and structured feedback, and documenting additional support for learners who require it.

Provide opportunistic clinical teaching in clinical environments to help students apply skills learned in simulation into patient care

Prepare, check and maintain simulation equipment and consumables in the local Practical Skills Lab to facilitate effective delivery of teaching programmes and capacity for unsupervised student practice

Promote high quality mentorship, supervision and assessment by supporting clinical staff in providing students with consistent, effective feedback and guidance throughout clinical placements

Contribute to other simulation based training and point of care ultrasound teaching. Training will be provided where needed.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Significant experience in field of own practice.
- Experience of managing or supervising multi disciplinary team and ability to mentor/educate junior staff.
- An understanding of clinical governance frameworks including Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), policy and procedure, audit and quality
- assurance.
- An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, particularly those related to vulnerable patients.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to be able to problem solve, use own initiative and plan, organise and prioritise own and others workload.
- Evidence of continuous professional development and a willingness to participate in further training and education.
- Competent IT skills.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Professional clinical registration in Nursing, Allied Healthcare Professional, Pharmacy or Healthcare Science with associated qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level.
- PLUS specialist professional knowledge relevant to practice / post with demonstratable competence to post graduate diploma level equivalent.
- Leadership / management training and/or experience.
