### Job overview

This is a newly established post. As a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physicist) in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine you will contribute to the work of an established team of ten clinical scientists who provide critical scientific and technical support to the work of this leading department.  The team currently includes four other Band 7 NM clinical scientists and three Band 8a leads, as well as 3 physics assistants.

You will work very closely with these colleagues, who alongside the Head of NM Physics, Deputy Head of NM Physics and Principal Physicist in molecular radiotherapy, will be able to support the you to quickly become established in this role.

You will be expected to participate in the very wide range of clinical and research and development activities of the department. Full training will be provided on both the equipment support rota and the radionuclide therapy support rota, and time off rota will be available for service development projects.

This post offers an excellent opportunity to extend your experience as a clinical scientist in nuclear medicine at a highly regarded centre that develops and practices cutting-edge techniques in both molecular radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging.  We proactively encourage our clinical scientists to work towards MPE portfolio submission, with dedicated time and peer support sessions.

### Main duties of the job

- To contribute to the work of the group in delivering a high standard of scientific and technical support to the clinical and research activities of the Institute.
- To perform routine clinical procedures and undertake clinical projects.
- To provide Duty Physicist cover to the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Service.
- To provide Duty Therapy Physicist cover to the Molecular Radiotherapy (MRT) Service for both the INM and Radiotherapy MRT rotas.
- To provide radiation safety and radiation protection support
- To participate in the development and introduction of new clinical protocols and procedures.
- To contribute to audit activities within the department
- To participate in the conduct of research and development projects.
- To give advice, training and practical support on the correct operation and quality assurance of a range of nuclear medicine, PET/CT and PET/MR instrumentation and computer systems.
- To undertake teaching and lecturing as required, and in the training, education and supervision of local and visiting staff; contributing to their continuing education and to the development of their competencies

The Institute of Nuclear Medicine has an international reputation for excellence in academic and clinical nuclear medicine. We are located in University College Hospital, providing a comprehensive nuclear medicine service that now undertakes over 20,000 studies per year to patients referred from UCLH and hospitals throughout the UK.

In addition to the extremely varied clinical workload, we have an extensive and internationally recognised internal research programme. We collaborate with both local and external researchers and are actively involved in the Trust’s NIHR BRC-funded programme for translational research and with its clinical trials portfolio. Our key strengths include the exploitation of PET and SPECT-based multimodality imaging, and access to a range of experimental PET and SPECT tracers.

We are developing cutting-edge techniques for oncological, neurological, and cardiac imaging, and are centrally involved in a very rapidly expanding and developing radionuclide therapy programme.   We have a wide range and expanding portfolio of equipment which includes PET/MR, three PET/CT systems, and four SPECT/CT systems, together with DXA bone densitometry and a full range of supporting nuclear medicine instrumentation. A wide range of routine and innovative experimental inpatient and outpatient radionuclide therapy procedures are also performed.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Capability consistent with relevant post-graduate exposure to the duties of this post, with some experience in nuclear medicine.
- An understanding of :
- The physics of nuclear medicine, and the principles of operation of radiation detectors.
- Current diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures.
- The operation of current nuclear medicine SPECT/CT and PET/CT equipment and image processing workstations.
- Equipment calibration, quality assurance and performance assessment.
- The principles and practice of internal radiation dosimetry, sufficient to perform estimates of the patient dose arising from non-standard procedures.
- Current methodologies for the processing and analysis of nuclear medicine, SPECT, PET and CT image data.
- Windows operating system and PC applications software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsers, mail tools.

**Desirable**

- Capability consistent with significant relevant post-graduate experience of the duties of this post, including that typical of some exposure in nuclear medicine.
