Do you enjoy working in an exciting and busy environment?  We have an opportunity for a fixed term appointment for a Clinical Research Fellow in Transplantation.  Excellent opportunities are available to pursue research within the scope currently being undertaken in the Department and that of interest to the individual.

This post in particular has a stronger research commitment with dedicated time for its conduct. Depending on the career pathway of the successful applicant they will be expected to complete a research project and research papers by the end of the placement. The appointee will be encouraged to register, if applicable and suitably qualified, for a higher degree with the Cardiff University MD or PhD after an initial period. The primary research project attached to this post will be focused on non-invasive markers of rejection and the role of antibody production in the outcome of pancreas transplantation. The postholder will be co-responsible for the everyday running of appropriate clinical trials in the unit under appropriate supervision.  The research projects could be a national collaboration and therefore the post might require some travelling to the collaborators Units.

### Main duties of the job

This is a mixed research and clinical post designed to offer opportunity for research, training in all aspect of transplantation, support the National Organ Retrieval component of the Cardiff Transplant team and also ensure compliance with the new contract for resident doctors in Wales. The holder of this post along with 3 NTN trainees, 3 clinical fellows and 1 other Research Fellow colleagues will provide out of hours cover for the Transplant Unit under the direct supervision of the Transplant Consultant on call.  Depending on experience and following training in all aspects of DBD and DCD abdominal organ retrieval (liver, pancreas and kidneys), the postholder will also participate in an appropriate rota to cover Organ Retrieval. Training in machine perfusion of kidneys will be also provided. The daytime duties include in-patient care of transplant and access surgery patients.  Each Research Fellow is expected to participate in a set number of clinics and theatre sessions on a rotational basis and devote significant time to research.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Full SHO (ST1 and ST2) rotation or equivalent programme abroad completed.

**Desirable**

- Previous SpR Level Surgical Experience
- MRCS

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Intercalated degree, MSc , Academic Excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions, etc)

### Special Interests

**Essential**

- Interest in General Surgery, Transplantation Surgery and Research

### Other requirements

**Essential**

- Current GMC certificate with a licence to practise, satisfactory immigration status for length of contract, satisfactory health clearance, satisfactory DBS clearance
