Applications are welcome for the above fixed term, full time (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Opportunity has arisen to work as a Clinical Research fellow in the COPD and Respiratory Team in Lothian for 12 months from August 2026. The Respiratory Directorate in Edinburgh has an excellent reputation for performing world class research trials, with a good clinical research facility set up and dedicated research nurses and doctors in the team.

The Respiratory Medicine Unit includes 46 inpatient beds (Ward 204), a Pulmonary Function Laboratory, a Sleep Lab and access to medical day case beds. This is the largest specialist respiratory ward in Scotland with high volume and rapid turnover of patients. We provide ward NIV and are re-introducing our Respiratory High Dependency area. The ward has a dedicated OT/Physio and pharmacy support. All the main respiratory subspecialties other than CF are co-located here including COPD, Asthma, Interstitial Lung Disease, Lung cancer, TB, Bronchiectasis, Pleural, Pulmonary Thrombo-Embolic Disease, Pulmonary Nodules, Sleep, Home Ventilation, amongst others. Each service area (inpatient and outpatient) has a dedicated group of consultants who provide a high level of daily senior decision making, support and supervision for the doctors in training and fellows. We promote MDT working and decision making and have a highly trained Respiratory Nursing Team on the ward.

Successful candidate will get excellent exposure to phase one, two and three trials as a sub investigator. This will include help set up trials, consenting patients to trials, physical examination, monitoring over trial periods and interpretation with data (with help from Dr Choudhury’s team) Part of the post will also be help with a COPD Digital Innovation Project in Lothian working closely with Dr Choudhury’s team and his PhD Fellow. The post will mainly be based in RIE Monday to Friday but there is some scope for negotiation for out of hours on call as necessary. Successful post holder will also need to work closely with COPD patients on the ward and clinics to help with consenting and assessments for future trials

The successful applicants will be supported to focus on their own personal development including Skills training, Quality Improvement, or can participate in Undergraduate Teaching throughout the year with 10% guaranteed development time.
