We are looking for a Band 7 Clinical Physiologist to join a team with passion, enthusiasm and commitment for Clinical Neurophysiology, and wide range of opportunities for continuing professional and personal development.

### Main duties of the job

The department carries out a full range of routine and advanced clinical neurophysiological tests and over 10,000 procedures each year. These include:
- EEGs: In the department on outpatients and inpatients: portable recordings on the wards, in ITU’s and during specialist procedures. We also run an ambulatory EEG service and satellite services.
- Evoked Potentials: Visual Evoked Potentials and Pattern Electroretinogram; Auditory Evoked Potentials; Sensory Evoked Potentials; Dermatomal Evoked Potentials; Contact Heat Evoked Potentials; Single or paired pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
- IOM: Multi-modality neurophysiological monitoring performed during complex neurosurgical procedures.
- Nerve conduction studies and examination of the nerve excitability profile
- Qualitative and quantitative Electromyography; Single fibre EMG
- Small fibre studies.
- Movement disorder analysis.
- EMG-guided Botulinum Toxin therapy.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Provide evidence (including indicative numbers) for independent performance of all EEG modalities
- Provide evidence of ability to work in technically challenging environments.
- Demonstrate ability to work with patients with challenging or confrontational behaviour
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Evidence (including indicative numbers) for independent performance of VEP, PERGs, SEP studies
- Evidence (including indicative numbers) for performance of nerve conduction studies
- Evidence of experience of supervising students or trainees.
- Demonstrate ability to organise and prioritise their own work.

**Desirable**

- Experience in IOMN or willingness to receive training in IOM
- Demonstrate ability to work with neonates and children
- Evidence (including indicative numbers) for independent performance of AEP and MEP studies

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- Must be able to show that they understand the value of SOPs and adhere to them in the daily work.
- Support with the development and maintenance of departmental standard operating procedures and policies
- Must be able to show that they can perform the full range of EEG investigations on adults, children and neonates, both in the outpatient Department and as a portable recording on wards and ITUs. This will include reviewing and preparing factual reports on these studies.
- Able to show that they can perform VEP, PERGs, SSEP
- Able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge of VEP, PERGs and, SEPs and the interpretation of test results.
- Able to show that they can perform standard nerve conduction studies in the upper and lower limbs
- Able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge of nerve conduction studies including innervation variants and the interpretation of test results.

### Specific Requirements

**Essential**

- The post holder will be required to work flexibly and participate in an on call rota.
- Post holder must have enough manual dexterity to be able to apply the electrodes and equipment accurately.
- The post holder may be required to manoeuvre patients around the department, in addition to which they may be required to move equipment around the hospital.
- Willing to take part in the organisational tasks of the department (e.g. ordering consumables, helping to organise rotas)
- Willing to work overtime should the need arise
- Willing to work off-site at hospitals other than NHNN

### Knowledge and Qualifications

**Essential**

- BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or equivalent
- Post Graduate Diploma (STP) or equivalent experience
- Member of the RCCP or willingness to work towards the membership
- Member of the HCPC or willingness to work towards the membership

**Desirable**

- Member of Professional Organisation (ANS, BSCN)

### Personal and People Development

**Essential**

- Experience in supervising student staff and visitors.

### Communication and Relationship Skills

**Essential**

- Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with all patients, some of whom may have communication difficulties or challenging/aggressive behaviour
- Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with parents or guardians of patients
- Able to communicate with Departmental medical staff regarding the complex specialist data recorded.
- Able to communicate effectively with other health care professionals from various disciplines.
