Clinical Oncology Research Fellowship in Brachytherapy

St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

12 months fixed term contract with option to extend starting February 2027.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow to join the Oncology team at St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.  The post is suited to an senior Oncology trainee with FRCR.

The Royal Surrey has recently launched the LDR BURST trial, and the successful post holder will play a key role in its delivery. This exciting opportunity involves recruiting, consenting and randomising patients, as well as coordinating follow-up after LDR brachytherapy or SBRT. You will work closely with the Research and Development team, contributing to the successful delivery and ongoing development of this important clinical trial while gaining valuable experience in research within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.

### Main duties of the job

You  will be taught all aspects of prostate brachytherapy to the level of a consultant level.  There is a complete web-based database recording the clinical outcomes of all those patients treated to date, which aids research activities.  The Uro-Oncology Department also has a medical statistician, writer and scientist as well as research nurses to maximize research opportunities. Previous fellows have undertaken both PhDs and MDs through the University of Surrey.  The position will initially be for 1 year and can be extended by mutual agreement.

Although this is not a training post, applicants will be encouraged to gain postgraduate qualifications in Oncology, and continuing professional development is encouraged.  Applications from less than full time trainees will be considered.

The Royal Surrey County Hospital Foundation Trust provides specialist Cancer and Haemato-oncological care, including complex Cancer surgery, to the population of the South West Surrey and Hampshire (previously SWSH cancer network), a catchment area of approximately 1.2 million. Non-surgical oncological treatment for these patients is provided at the St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, which is an integral part of the Trust. There are close links with surrounding cancer units and the Surrey Clinical Research Centre.

St Luke’s offers a nationally leading Radiotherapy service that enables patients to have more choice in their treatment options. The Consultants delivering the service are involved in National and International teaching and research ensuring quality and care for every patient.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is linked between the Oncology department at the St Luke’s Centre and the department of Urology. There are also strong links with the University of Surrey so providing both a wealth of clinical data together with the resources of a University.  The post holder will become an integral member of the brachytherapy team and by the end of the post will have gained certified training in both HDR and 1125 LDR Prostate Brachytherapy.
