### Job summary

Independent expert practitioner responsible for the assessment of those patients who present with sexual health needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of a holistic programme of evidence-based, confidential contraception and sexual health care in the health and justice setting.

The applicant will be expected to provide autonomous Level 1 and 2 sexual health services in Spectrum's Health and Justice Settings in the NorthWest (HMPs Liverpool/Forest Bank/Hindley/Haverigg/Styal/Buckley Hall). The post-holder will be expected to work without direct supervision, as part of the wider healthcare team providing care for patients in accordance with the standards and guidelines set by the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). The post-holder will also actively promote good sexual health through the provision of health promotion and health education.

### Main duties of the job

Using a Trauma Informed approach to care interactions and interventions the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of advanced nursing skills within complex patient care pathways requiring analysis interpretation and application of personal judgements to provide the correct level of care and treatment. This will include those who may need additional consideration due to their complex social, emotional, psychological and physical needs (mental health, learning disabilities, young people, 18-21 with complex lives e.g exploitation) identified and/or referred through various channels within the prison setting. It may require on occasion that these patients are seen outside of the routine clinical environment ie. on the wing.

Take the lead role in conjunction with and guidance of the local Level 3 provision, ensuring level 1 and 2 needs are met within the prison and any onward referral for level 3 care, is timely, working with the local level 3 provider to ensure care pathways are established, maintained and followed. There is a requirement to comply with clinical systems, protocols and guidelines.

Responsible for the teaching, mentoring and assessment of students and staff within the department and foster a learning culture.

### Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide a high level of personal care to patients to ensure they are treated with dignity and respect at all times, are provided with high quality care, clear and understandable information in a format/language they understand and feel their individual needs have been respected and met. The post holder is accountable for their own practice without direct supervision and will be a direct provider of higher-level nursing practice to patients with contraceptive and sexual health needs.

The post is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, responsible for the delivery of highly technical and specialised nursing skills may will include but not be limited to:

Assessment and history taking

Clinical examination, including bi-manual and testicular examinations.

Instigation and interpretation of diagnostics investigations

Formulation of a diagnosis / identifying appropriate methods of contraception

initiation of treatment and plans of care, including independent prescription of medications.

Provision of all modalities of contraception including all modes of implant when providing a contraceptive service.

Appropriate onward referral to other health and social care professionals

The post holder will function in a variety of non-provider roles including educator, researcher and consultancy, providing advice and information for clinical staff within the organisation and other health, social and third sector provider organisations. This will include contributing to the development of the nursing profession, nursing practice and the speciality group.

Provide Leadership to other Clinical Nurse Specialists, Health Care Assistants and Administrative staff.

In conjunction with the multi-professional team, they will develop the provision and quality of contraceptive and sexual health services for patients. This will demonstrably reflect the principles of clinical governance, clinical effectiveness, cost effectiveness as well as organisation and National Policy.

- Registered Adult Nurse Post-Graduate or equivalent experience/portfolio evidence. Holds a recognised teaching course/qualification e.g., ENB 998 or equivalent.
- Holds a Specialist accredited nursing qualification/s in Sexual Health Nursing. i.e., Diploma in Professional Studies in Sexual Health, BSc in Contraception & Sexual Health, BASHH STIF+ Certificate and associated competencies and FSRH Contraception Diploma.
- LOC - Sub Dermal Implants LOC- Intra-uterine Techniques (willing to work towards completion within the first year of post).
- Non-Medical Prescriber or willing to work towards.

**Desirable**

- Master's Level Certificate
- Membership of professional bodies/Forums
- Counselling Certificate
- Leadership/Management Certificate

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Previous experience of ISH/CASH or GUM is essential
- 3 years working in an independent practitioner role, within a specialist sexual health setting.
- Knowledge of the use of PGDs.
- Demonstrates comprehensive patient management within the sexual health care setting.
- Good understanding of clinical governance and quality outcomes.

**Desirable**

- Experience in allied specialties e.g. Gynaecology, general practice, dermatology.
- Evidence of ongoing teaching and training
- Familiarity with Systm1 computer system.
