## Job Content

### Job overview

This post is designed to support the activities of the Trent Oesophago-Gastric Unit (TOGU) at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), and provide specialist training at post-CCT level in Oesophago-Gastric (OG) surgery. The post will be based at City Hospital Campus of Nottingham University Hospitals. The post-holder will work with all of the OG surgeons in turn and be responsible to the clinical lead in OG surgery.

TOGU at NUH oversees the care of patients with both benign and malignant oesophagogastric (OG) conditions across Nottinghamshire and nearby regions. This service operates within a multidisciplinary team environment, encouraging all members to actively participate in patient care. Alongside maintaining these high standards, the unit is dedicated to research and aims to provide every patient with access to clinical trials, currently enrolling in seven different studies. Additionally, TOGU is a major contributor to the oesophageal cancer clinical and molecular stratification (OCCAMS) study. TOGU offers specialised tertiary referral services for OG conditions to a population of 2 million people in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, making it one of the largest OG cancer centers in Europe.

This is a 12-month post specifically intended for senior trainees seeking additional experience in OG surgery before applying for consultant posts in OG surgery with a planned start date of Jan 2027.

### Main duties of the job

Opportunities will be available to receive training in open and minimally invasive OG cancer surgery, complex benign OG procedures such as hiatus hernia and achalasia surgeries, as well as endoscopic treatments like stenting, endomucosal resections (EMR), and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The main responsibility of this position is to provide adaptable support for OG lists, clinics, and endoscopy lists as needed. The post-holder is expected to assist with all departmental activities daily and will have duties specifically related to the OG department during this period. The successful candidate’s schedule will vary weekly based on theatre case mix, staff availability, and expertise.

The post-holder is expected to teach junior team members basic laparoscopic procedures and participate in delivering an acute OG on-call system under the supervision of experienced consultant surgeons. The workload will fluctuate depending on the number of clinics and lists each week, requiring a flexible approach.
