While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

### Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Senior clinical fellow/Junior clinical fellow to work with the established multidisciplinary Palliative Medicine team providing specialist palliative, and end of life care to patients under the care of Palliative and Supportive Care Team at Southampton General Hospital. This a fixed term 6 month 0.7 WTE post and gives an amazing opportunity for someone wanting to gain some experience of Palliative Medicine in a busy acute teaching hospital. There are no on call commitments for this job.

The start date for this job would be 5th August 2026

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work with the Supportive and Palliative Care team at Southampton General Hospital, working alongside the team to provide symptom control advice and support to patients in the acute hospital.   You will be expected to attend and contribute to daily handover and team discussion, then review patients referred to the team across the hospital. Depending on experience, these reviews will initially be done with another member of the team, but it is envisaged that you will develop your skills and confidence to conduct reviews of new and follow-up patients independently in time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION    Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists.  Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
- Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
- Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
- A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

### Qualifications, Training & Experience

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- At least two years postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis)

**Desirable**

- MRCP (UK) full diploma or MCEM (Full) or MRCGP (full, with CCT) or MRCS (Full) or FRCA (Full) or FRCS or EEA eligibility
- Diploma in Palliative Medicine
- Higher qualification in medical education
- Four years postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) with at least two years in a relevant specialty
