### Job overview

Clinical Fellow (ST3 equivalent- essential criteria MRCP and NHS experience) working within the Infection care group across infectious diseases and medical microbiology roles. This role may encompass ward Infectious Disease cover, Infectious Disease and HIV clinics, Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Service (OPAT), Laboratory results authorisation and interpretation, telephone and bedside consults, Infection Control, Bacteraemia and chronic infection service, Virology, and ITU liaison. The postholder will participate in the on-call service for Infection once an appropriate level of training has been achieved. Consultant advice is available always during such service. The current rota is 1:12 non-resident on-call with weekends 1:6.

### Main duties of the job

Clinical management:  This role may be in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases (ID).

Within Microbiology the role involves :(1) Result authorisation and telephone advice to doctors and other health professionals in the hospital and community; (2) Blood culture service and infection consults; (3) intensive care unit liaison; (4) hospital infection control; (5) antibiotic stewardship; (5) Virology; (6) OPAT and management of chronic infections.

Within ID the role involves: To appropriately assess, investigate and manage acutely ill patients presenting to St George’s Hospital with community-acquired and imported infection, tuberculosis and HIV and associated opportunistic infections. Participation in a general ID outpatient clinic may be done in rotation with SHOs. The infection department has also played a major part in our hospitals Covid-19 response and you may be rotated to Covid-19 wards.

Teaching: Bedside teaching of medical students in rotation with clinical team

Training: Attendance at weekly clinical and MDT meetings and journal club Bench training in Medical Microbiology and weekly ST teaching in Infection

Audit/ research: As this is a fixed term appointment, participation in audit is voluntary but not mandatory

- Competence at coreCompetence at core training completion level in the management of medical emergencies, in-patients and outpatients
- Competent at performance of lumbar punctures

- Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification)
- Evidence of ST3 level procedural skills relevant to medical patients (clinical independence in central venous cannulation, chest drain insertion, joint aspiration, DC cardioversion, abdominal paracentesis)

### Knowledge

- Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing patients with infection, including awareness of relevant medical microbiology and virology laboratory techniques

### Experience

**Essential**

- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent
- Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Able to prioritise clinical need
- Able to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Previous NHS employment at IMT2 level.

**Desirable**

- Experience at CT/ST 1/2 level of managing patients with infectious disease including imported/ tropical infections

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification;
- CT/ST 1&2 competences;
- MRCP(UK) Part 1 or equivalent by time of application
- Full MRCP(UK) diploma or equivalent by time of post offer.
- Full GMC registration
- Evidence of achievement of foundation and core medical competencies from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Health
- Intercalated BSc or equivalent
