### Job overview

This is a  post with the Burns team June 2026 – January 2027. It provides an excellent opportunity to experience a broad and concentrated exposure to all aspects of total burns care in children. Also, an honorary contract will be arranged with the adult burns centre at Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham, in order to have experience in total burns care in adults. In addition, you will have exposure to laser therapy for burns scars. The post is suitable for plastic surgery trainees with interest in burns subspeciality

The department has an active research activity with regular participation in national and international meetings.

There is an expectation to participate in research, presentation and publication. Also, the candidates will participate in the joint burns audits and research meeting with QE

Burns is currently part of the wider paediatric plastic surgical team. The Department of Paediatric Plastic Surgery at Birmingham Children’s Hospital provides care for the population of southern and central Birmingham, and more specialist tertiary care for the West Midlands Region (population 5.8 million). Burns and Craniofacial Services are provided on a Supra Regional basis. Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a paediatric major trauma centre.

### Main duties of the job

- Normal Working day consists of covering the burns centre.
- Attend outpatient clinics
- Assist in the evaluation of patients
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
- Ward rounds and preoperative assessment and preparation, surgery and postoperative care of patients
- Attend the Emergency Department to assess, plan and deliver treatment of patients referred
- Assist in the clinical teaching activities of the department
- Assist in organizing weekly patient review meetings
- Cover other colleagues in their absence
- conduct active audit and research
- The postholder will be expected to adhere strictly to principles of fairness and equality in carrying out the role.  At all times the postholders will be required to show respect for and maintain the dignity of patients, the public and work colleagues

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- - Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with licence to practice.
- - The Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) certificate

**Desirable**

- - FRCS (Plast), EBOPRAS or equivalent is highly desirable
- - ATLS and PALS

### Interests and motivation

- - Demonstrate evidence of interest in burns surgery and laser as a career path ; as publications, presentations or audits in burns topics

### Research, Audit, Teaching and Training

### Special Knowledge /Abilities/ and/or experience

**Essential**

- - Experience at least 6 months at the registrar level in adults or paediatrics burns in the NHS.
- - Experience as a full time registrar level in Plastic Surgery in the NHS for at least 6 months
- - Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative.
- - Ability to know own limitations and when to seek advice.
