### Job overview

Clinical Engineering is primarily concerned with providing comprehensive equipment management on medical devices including evaluation and selection, acceptance checks, repair, calibration and maintenance to a wide range of medical devices and equipment within Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The aim is to ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Clinical equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems.

The post holder will carry out work on medical device library equipment as well as clinical areas including all general wards, Accident and Emergency, Cardiology department, and support community sites. The post holder is also required to support other colleagues in their duty as and when required.

The post holder will (rotational) carry out specialist servicing, repair, calibration, scheduled preventative maintenance, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of patient connected medical equipment. The post holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability.

The post holder liaises with clinical and other technical staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas and working with manufacturers, as appropriate.

### Main duties of the job

- Provide specialised clinical technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration, inspection and repair to a wide range of complex and patient- connected medical equipment. These also include the life support and life saving devices under all conditions of urgency. The post holder is also required to manage the medical devices library, daily issue and collection of loaned devices from wards/department, as no longer required for use, quick functional checks performed and made ready for next use. Ensure accurate record keeping is maintained at all times. This will apply to all work carried out, for the entire history of each job or project. Liaise with manufacturers to obtain technical and clinical information. Provide feedback on equipment performance to Supervisor, Deputy manager, team colleagues, clinical staff and external organisation as appropriate.

- Take responsibility for all tools and equipment within the post holder’s care. Ensure workshop facilities are kept clear and well-ordered and that all workshop test equipment is maintained to acceptable standards. Where DME equipment is passed to others to use, make sure they are authorised to use it in a safe and effective manner. Provide technical advice to clinical and other staff groups as required. Ensure that all work requests via telephone or direct contact are suitably recorded onto the Job Logging system.

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- Good negotiation skills and experience of dealing with external suppliers for procurement or technical information
- Able to ensure that the best course of corrective action is taken within the clinical or non-clinical environment

**Desirable**

- Use of spreadsheets and data extraction tools
- Able to concentrate when dealing with unpredictable working patterns

### Education/Qualifications

**Essential**

- HNC/HND in medical electronic/electronic engineering or equivalent level

- Degree in relevant subjects

### Knowledge and Experience

**Essential**

- Biomedical experience
- Experience in applying workshop techniques and practices to a large range of patient connected equipment within the healthcare environment

- Level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
