### JOB SUMMARY

The post holder, as an active member of Critical Care Services senior nursing team and in conjunction with the Critical Care Managers will be responsible for facilitating education and practice development within the Critical Care Units. She/he will collaborate with key individuals, including the Unit Managers and Senior Medical team to ensure that expertise exists within the Critical Care Areas to provide specialist nursing care. The post holder will play a key role in facilitating work based learning focused on enabling staff to work in a person centred approach. She/he will also play a role in identifying education and development needs and meeting these in innovative ways. The post holder will contribute to the establishment of an effective learning environment within the critical care units.

### KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will focus and lead on the following key areas, within the organisation’s governance framework:

### 1.0 CLINICAL EDCUATION PRACTITIONER

1.1 Act as a role model to demonstrate professional leadership within and external to the trust

1.2 Maintain an up to date knowledge base ensuring professional, academic, and clinical credibility.

1.3 Under the supervision of the Unit managers you will manage and coordinate learning activities within the Critical Care Units. The post holder will work shifts on the floor to provide support, teach and facilitate the nursing workforce.

1.4 Contribute to the management of student placements, educational audits for pre and post registration nursing students.

1.5 Participate in and support the Critical Care Units nursing staff involvement in audit activities.

1.6 Ensure regular evaluation of effectiveness of own role

1.7 Provide leadership that facilitates professional decision making and effective team working.

1.8 Demonstrate clinical expertise by role modelling person centred practice to others.

1.9 Participate in ensuring systems and processes are in place to support and lead nursing staff in promoting person centred care to agreed standards.

1.10 Promote nursing in the Units, Division and Trust including educational establishments in order to enhance recruitment and retention of nursing staff

### 2.0 EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT

2.1 Work in collaboration with the Critical Care Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses, to ensure the ongoing training and educational needs of nursing staff within the units are identified. To develop personalised development programmes in conjunction with the Trust Clinical Career Framework to meet these needs.

2.2 Work in collaboration with the Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses to co-ordinate and deliver the training and education of nursing staff within Critical Care Units, to ensure that they have the appropriate skills and knowledge base to deliver quality nursing care.

2.2 Contribute to the management of lack of competence within the department

2.3 Co-ordinate and monitor the Critical Care nursing staff attendance at mandatory training sessions .

2.4 Lead, in conjunction with the Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses the development, implementation and evaluation of effective orientation/preceptorship programmes for nursing staff.

2.5 Work closely with all Critical Care nursing staff and assist them to evaluate their own development.

2.6 Contribute to the promotion of high standards of care maximising learning and assessment activities in practice

2.7 Develop training & development programmes for Critical Care nursing staff in conjunction with Critical Care Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses & education providers.

2.8 To co-ordinate and facilitate uptake of formal training & development programmes for Critical Care nursing staff, in conjunction with Critical Care Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses.

2.9 Participate with the Unit Sisters/Charge Nurses for the Critical Care, in the training and induction programmes for Health Care Assistants.

2.10 Participate in, support and encourage research and evidence based practice for the enhancement of patient care.

2.11 Contribute to developing an environment that encourages reflective practice through action learning, clinical supervision and peer review.

2.12 Maintain own personal and professional development in accordance

with the NMC code of professional conduct and within the scope of professional practice.

2.13 Be responsible for ensuring that his/her own continuing professional development is in keeping with PREP/revalidation requirements.

2.14 Liaise with external educational establishments in ensuring validation of formal training and development programmes.

2.15 Monitor and evaluate the uptake of specialist practice programmes in the Critical Care Units through participation in the Commissioning Process.

2.16 Develop, deliver, evaluate and critically review the effectiveness of learning and development activities undertaken by staff.

### 3.0 MANAGEMENT

3.1 Adhere to all Southern Health & Social Care Policies.

3.2 Maintain an up to date knowledge base, ensuring professional,

academic and clinical credibility. This will involve working and role modelling as a practitioner in the unit and involve participating in the internal rotation system as required.

3.3 Contribute to the development of policies relevant to Critical Care Units.

3.4 Participate in developing a strategic plan for education, training and

development within Critical Care Units.

3.5 Attend working groups and meetings and deputise for Critical Care Sisters/Lead Nurse/Head of Service as required.

3.6 Participate in the Recruitment and retention of Critical Care nursing

staff as required

3.7 Observe for any signs of ill health or stress factors in staff assigned

to the area and report as appropriate to the Unit Manager

3.8 Demonstrate effective decision making that is person centred and consistent with trust policies.

3.9 Ensure effective and efficient use of resources.

3.10 Ensure systems are in place to provide a safe environment for patient care within the risk management, research and clinical governance strategies.

3.11 Ensure adherence to the DHSSPS guidelines for the safe handling,

administration storage and custody of medicinal products.

3.12 Liaise and network with other staff and Departments.

3.13 Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and development of the role.
