This is an exciting opportunity for a suitable experienced doctor (completed FY 1 and 2) to complete a fixed 6 month posting at a leading tertiary orthopaedic hospital with a strong reputation for innovation, education, and patient outcomes, providing an excellent setting for professional development. The post will be divided into two rotations; 3 months in Medical Education and 3 months in Arthroplasty.

It would ideally suit doctors wishing to expand their orthopaedic and clinical teaching experience. It is anticipated to appeal to those at core training level.

The post offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated doctor to join a dynamic, expanding education team delivering medical undergraduate and multi-professional learning in addition to the opportunity to join the Arthroplasty team, developing clinical surgical skills and experience in an internationally renowned Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital. Due to the short term nature of the role/service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC, must have completed a Foundation Programme or demonstrable equivalent qualification. The successful candidate must have at least 24 months experience (Clinical) demonstrates a strong understanding of working clinically with the NHS, plus a good understanding of UK medical undergraduate training.

### Main duties of the job

Supporting the University of Chester curriculum delivery and responsibilities may include:

- Organising weekly formal teaching sessions
- Bedside teaching
- Clinical skills
- Lectures
- Simulation based teaching
- Attend clinical educational opportunities where appropriate.
- Contribute to the supervision and feedback to undergraduate medical students, under the direction of an accredited educational supervisor.
- Maintain a portfolio of education evidencing a wide-ranging of teaching experience including: small group bedside teaching, classroom based teaching, clinical skills, clinical simulation and the development of e-learning and other teaching resources and undertake an appraisal at an appropriate interval.
- To participate in continuing professional development.
- Feedback and contribute to University of Chester curriculum development team.
- Complete, present or write up an educational project during their 6-month post
- Support medical students from all Universities

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- 24 months experience (clinical) of working within the NHS (observership NOT accepted)
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of commencing post, in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
- Competent to work without direct clinical supervision, where appropriate
- Experience managing acute and post-operative patients

**Desirable**

- Held a previous teaching post or designated teaching role
- Previous post graduate orthopaedic attachment
- Undertaken training or CPD related to teaching
- Publication or presentation to a national or international audience

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
- MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification

**Desirable**

- Qualification in Medical Education
- Intercollegiate MRCS (including part A only if incomplete)
- Additional medical qualifications (e.g. BSc)

### Skills and competencies

**Essential**

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate medical topics to students, patients and colleagues in a clear and sensitive way
- Evidence of previous teaching experience
- Ability to organise and manage priorities
- Ability to assess and manage patients independently at SHO level
- Good clinical reasoning and decision-making skills

**Desirable**

- Experience of teaching clinical skills
- Experience of multi-professional teaching.
- Clinical simulation / Technology Enhanced Learning experience
