### Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Coding Auditor, you will:

- Provide expert assurance on clinical coding accuracy and data quality
- Identify, analyse and escalate material financial and data quality risks
- Plan and deliver a programme of structured financial and data quality audits across a range of activity including outpatient and emergency department data
- Produce reports and assurance summaries with recommendations
- Act as Data Quality Lead providing line management to the Data Quality team
- Contribute to service development, improvement and transformation initiatives within the Data Assurance Unit

## Job Description

As a Clinical Coding Auditor, you will:

Provide expert assurance on clinical coding accuracy and data quality

Identify, analyse and escalate material financial and data quality risks

Plan and deliver a programme of structured financial and data quality audits across a range of activity including outpatient and emergency department data

## Person Specification

### Language

**Essential**

- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, at a level consistent with the requirements of the role.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Expert knowledge and application of ICD-10, OPCS-4, and National Clinical Coding Standards and datasets
- Strong working knowledge of NHS payment mechanisms, including current and emerging funding schemes
- Knowledge of information governance, confidentiality, and data protection requirements
- Ability to independently form assurance judgements with potential financial consequences

**Desirable**

- Awareness of ICD-11
- Awareness of insourcing, outsourcing, private patient, and overseas visitor coding considerations

### Experience

**Essential**

- Significant post-qualification experience in clinical coding across a broad range of specialties
- Demonstrable experience of financial or data quality audit relating to clinical coding
- Experience of identifying and analysing data quality issues with financial or income impact
- Experience of providing assurance findings to operational, finance, or senior management teams
- Experience of leading or managing staff

**Desirable**

- Experience of working with NHS commissioners or commissioning data
- Experience of assurance activity relating to payment mechanisms, income protection, or elective recovery schemes
- Experience of assurance relating to private patient or overseas visitor activity
- Experience of mortality coding assurance or mortality review processes
- Experience of contributing to national benchmarking or improvement programmes (e.g. GIRFT, HED).

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ)
- Approved Clinical Coding Auditor status - nationally recognised
- Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

**Desirable**

- Qualification or formal training in data analysis, finance, audit, or information management
- Leadership or management qualification or equivalent experience

### Technical skills

**Essential**

- Ability to design or develop reports to prioritise assurance activity based on financial risk
- Ability to use Microsoft Excel to manipulate, analyse, and validate datasets (e.g. filters, pivots, formulas) in support of audit, assurance, and risk prioritisation activity
- Ability to work with data warehouses and reporting environments, including the use of basic SQL queries or equivalent data extraction methods, to retrieve and analyse clinical coding and activity data in support of audit, assurance, and risk prioritisation activity

**Desirable**

- Ability to interpret and adapt existing SQL queries or data extracts to support targeted audit and assurance requirements
- Experience of developing assurance intelligence or analytical tools to support income protection

### Other requirements specific to role

- Strong written and verbal communication skills for assurance reporting and governance escalation
- Ability to undertake a minimum of 150 hours of clinical coding per annum (pro rata) to maintain professional competence
- Ability to work on-site and cross-site, with discreet hybrid working where service needs allow
- Willingness to engage with commissioners and external partners as required
