The Clinical Advisor is a registered nurse or paramedic providing telephone-based assessment, triage and clinical advice within the London Ambulance Service Clinical Hub. ### Job responsibilities

The Clinical Advisor is a registered nurse or paramedic who provides telephone-based assessment, triage and clinical advice within the London Ambulance Service Clinical Hub. Supporting the 999 Hear and Treat service, the postholder helps patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Using structured triage systems, clinical expertise and professional judgement, the Clinical Advisor assesses patients of all ages with urgent physical and mental health needs. They identify red-flag symptoms, evaluate risk and determine the safest care pathway. This may include providing self-care and safety-netting advice, arranging an emergency response or referring patients to NHS 111, GPs, urgent treatment centres, emergency departments or community services.

The role requires advanced listening, questioning and communication skills, particularly when supporting distressed, anxious or challenging callers. The postholder works autonomously, maintains accurate and confidential clinical records, recognises safeguarding concerns and escalates complex cases appropriately.

Clinical Advisors collaborate with ambulance crews, healthcare professionals and emergency services to ensure safe referrals and effective handovers. They also contribute to clinical governance, incident reporting, audit, service improvement and colleague development.

Applicants must hold current NMC or HCPC registration, have relevant post-registration clinical experience and be able to work rotating shifts within a 24-hour emergency service.
