We have an exciting job opportunity for a dedicated Special School Nurse Band 6 Nurse to join our friendly and progressive Community Special School Nursing Team in Hillingdon.  The team is well-established and committed to providing compassionate, care to children who are facing acute, complex, and long-term health conditions. We currently provide a 5-day service to children and Young People in Special Schools .

The Special School Nurse will work in partnership with families, Special Schools, Health, Statutory and Voluntary Organisations to provide a high standard supportive care to  children and young people with profound and complex health issues associated severe learning disabilities. The Nurse will work autonomously to provide a full range of services to children/young people in the school setting but is particularly skilled in epilepsy, wound care, central line management and enteral feeding and medication administration.

Will have the responsibility for supporting and training parents and school staff with a variety of health conditions.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individual who is a highly motivated independent practitioner,  underpinned by a solid foundation in evidence-based nursing practices.   While experience working in the community is preferred, it is not essential. We are interested in your skill set and what you can bring to our team.

The Children’s Special School nurse  provides support with nursing care, training and support for children, young people (aged 0-19) in school settings, enabling them to remain safely in the community and transition to adult services where appropriate.

Our team look after the following children and young people in the community:

- Children with acute and short-term conditions
- Children with long term conditions
- Children with disabilities and complex conditions, including neonates
- Children with life-limiting and life-threatening illness, including palliative and end-of-life-care
- Safeguarding

Children's  Special School Nurses  work closely with the people who use our services and play an important role in helping children and young people receive the care they need while empowering families to manage their health effectively within the community setting. Your dedication and expertise will contribute to improving the lives of the youngest members of our community.

Children’s Special school nurses  are expected to be kind and responsive, but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

- keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through the use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments
- ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures
- ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering, and working in partnership with people throughout the care planning process

We believe that the best health care is delivered by multi-disciplinary teams working well together and in partnership with other teams and services to provide seamless care. Children’s Special School Nurses work as part of a team and you will contribute to the success of the team by being an effective role model, delegating training, teaching and supervising school employed HCA's and staff,   to ensure they are working to the standards that the people using our services deserve.

### KNOWLEDGE

**Essential**

- Knowledge and understanding of personal development planning
- Knowledge and demonstration  of the use of Evidenced Based Care
- Knowledge and experience of  Clinical Supervision
- Knowledge of Clinical  Governance and its  implementations
- High level of knowledge of NMC code of professional conduct
- Knowledge of political issues  within the profession and NHS  Knowledge of audit process

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of legal  and statutory  implications /  requirements for  training parents /  carers
- Knowledge of        budgetary  management

### EXPERIENCE

**Essential**

- Extensive post registration experience
- Recent experience of working with community children nursing or special school settings
- Teaching experience
- Experience of working  with students/carers
- Previous Management/  Leadership experience
- Community Experience

**Desirable**

- Epilepsy – knowledge/experience
- Experience of working  in culturally diverse  communities

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- High standard of clinical  expertise, including palliative  care, respiratory, cardiac,  gastroenterology, special needs  and complex care and/or life  threatening/limiting conditions  Safeguarding.
- IV therapy within the community
- Leadership skills and the ability  to motivate staff
- Ability to work independently  and within a team
- Decision making skills
- Good communication skills
- Ability to respond to demands  and challenges
- Ability to adapt to change  Car driver, access to car

### EDUCATION AND  QUALIFICATIONS

**Essential**

- RSCN / RN(Child)
- NMC Registration
- Evidence of post  registration education and  training, including paediatric  training
- Education to diploma/degree

**Desirable**

- Numerous skills for  safe administration of medicines
- Community  Nursing/Specialist Practitioner Qualification  Epilepsy
