### Job summary

Childrens Clinic manger is responsible for leading the day to day operations of the children's clinic to ensure high quality, safe and compassionate care for Children and their families. This role include managing staff, co-ordinating services ( including day case and specialist clinics) maintaining compliance and healthcare standards and driving continuous improvement in patient experience and clinical performance.

### Main duties of the job

To ensure the maintenance of high quality patient focussed, family centred care at all times through effective leadership, and management of staff and resources and to be available for advice and support within the speciality

Demonstrate strong clinical leadership in stressful and challenging situations.

Promote a positive approach to new challenges and creative ways of working.

To act as advocate for designated area and liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.

To ensure effective training and educational programmes are available by liaising with appropriate personnel to meet the training and educational needs of nurses in the clinical area. This post carries continuing responsibility for the management of the countywide Childrens Outpatient Department, including the deployment and supervision of staff.

Accept personal responsibility and accountability for infection prevention and control practice. Ensure that you are familiar with, and comply with, all relevant policies. Ensure that you receive mandatory updates in infection control.

The post carries responsibility for the day to day management of childrens outpatient and nurse led medical and surgical day care services including deployment and supervision of staff.

The post holder will deputise for the Modern Matron for Children and young People and take responsibility for clinical and managerial decisions in her absence.

### Job responsibilities

1. Professional/Clinical Leadership

Accept personal responsibility and accountability for your infection prevention and control practice. Ensure that you are familiar with, and comply with, all relevant policies. Ensure that you receive mandatory updates in infection control.

Develop practice in addressing individuals health and wellbeing needs.

To ensure that the needs of children attending the department are met taking account of growth and development, physical, psychological and social needs.

Promote individual equality, diversity and rights.

To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, co-ordinating the holistic needs of the patients. To be responsible for the organisation of nursing care of the patients who have been assigned to the team.

To take measures to ensure the safety of patients, which includes delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate levels of skills at all times. To report any untoward incidents/accidents to Matron/Head of Nursing/Directorate Manager.

Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters, overcoming any problems in communication.

Lead work teams in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice.

To maintain competence and undertake advanced roles within established nurse led service.

To supervise other nurses within the paediatric department, who have undertaken appropriate education and training, and assess competence to undertake advanced roles.

To ensure practice within the department is in the best interest of the child and that safeguarding procedures is in line with local and national policies which are adhered to.

2. Clinical Governance

Promote best practice in health, safety and security.

Contribute to quality improvement.

To facilitate research based practice within their Department and ensure appropriate implementation.

To ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

To ensure good standards of practice in all clinical areas through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.

To ensure all staff are conversant and comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lectures as instructed.

To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

3. Management

To ensure that a duty rota for the staff within the countywide clinics, medical and surgical day case areas will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meet with the requirements of the service and ensures the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times. Taking into account the budgetary constraints.

To liaise with other Ward/Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary, to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and discuss with Matron/Directorate Manager any problems regarding nurse management.

To ensure effective and constructive links between the activities of the childrens clinic and 1) acute paediatric services including acute ward, accident and emergency and theatres. 2) Other departments with children attending i.e. ENT, radiology 3) Community childrens services countywide.

To manage admission of planned and urgent clinic attenders and day cases to ensure adequate nursing cover and safe practice within the nurse led service.

Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals.

To manage the Unit allocated budget effectively to remain within financial constraints.

To ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.

Plan, obtain and deploy physical and/or financial resources.

To provide information for and participate in studies to determine workloads, patient dependency and quality assurance.

To maintain accurate records relating to all aspects of Department management.

To participate in a rota of cover in the absence of Matron/Directorate Manager.

Contribute to the development of services.

4. Staff Development

In collaboration with the matron facilitate processes to enable all staff to reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills identified through professional development review (PDR) process and personal development plans (PDP) and the revalidation process.

To plan and participate in the teaching programmes of learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the University.

To develop the role of nursing within their specialty Ward and undertake training and assessment to extend clinical skills as appropriate to the Ward.

To identify areas for development of skills in accordance with the NMC guidelines.

Develop knowledge and practice in an area of work.

5. Professional

To maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient and professional in accordance with the NMC Code.

To promote a positive attitude for the profession and the Trust within which you are working.

To be aware of personal and professional development. To attend courses and conferences as appropriate to the service and individual development.

To be conversant and comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lectures as instructed.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Relevant experience at Band 6 within related speciality

**Desirable**

- Experience working within the Childrens Clinic Environment
- experience in Change management
- experience in improvement work

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- First Level Registration.
- Degree or working towards.
- Evidence of significant Continuing Professional Development.
- Evidence of management experience/training.
- NMC recognised Teaching/Assessing qualification
- Advanced health assessment skills and experience

**Desirable**

- Masters Degree
