### Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high quality time-limited therapy to UHMBT employees referred to the Counselling Service following a bereavement, or living with anxiety, depression, work related stress, or other losses and their effects on mental health. This will involve providing comprehensive specialist psychological therapy; liaising with multidisciplinary teams where needed, and working autonomously within professional guidelines, exercising personal responsibility for the systematic governance of professional practice. Clinical casework primarily involves providing specialist therapy for individuals living with a range of issues. The post holder is expected to work only within their range of competency, seek regular supervision as deemed necessary, and escalate any concerns to the Nurse Manager or Wellbeing Lead.

These are two posts - one at Lancaster and one at Barrow

### Main duties of the job

- To work with UHMBT staff who are referred by management, Occupational Health Nurses or self referred.
- To offer both short term work with clients, and refer on where clinically indicated.
- To provide a brief psychological assessment of the need for counselling or psychotherapy, drawing on theoretical knowledge, whilst utilising current research to formulate and implement treatment plans dependent on client’s needs.
- To undertake risk assessment and risk management, taking into account the level of trauma experienced by client. Work within the scope of personal competence, seeking regular supervision where required and escalating any concerns to the Nurse manager or Wellbeing lead.
- To refer clients to local services where appropriate.
- To be mindful of concerns such as Safeguarding and child protection issues.
- To hold an appropriate level of confidentiality which both respects the client’s rights and aids the work of the MDT.
- Ensure services are sensitive to the needs of clients from different social, racial and cultural backgrounds and communicate across language and cultural barriers respecting the cultural context of service user.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To undertake responsibility for maintaining the highest standards of clinical record keeping, including electronic data entry and recording, and professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice for the UKCP, BACP, or equivalent, and Trust policies and procedures.
- To maintain up-to–date knowledge of legislation, including national and local Trust policies in relation to clinical practice.
- Ability to create a calm, appropriate environment for clients in a highly emotive situation and respond appropriately to this need. You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- At least 1000 hours experience in providing supervised counselling or Psychotherapy to adults, with common mental health problems, within a primary mental health service.
- Experience of establishing effective communication.
- Experience of mentoring and assessing junior staff.

**Desirable**

- Experience of working within a multidisciplinary therapy service

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Professional Advanced Level 4 Diploma in Counselling or Diploma in Psychotherapy (BACP approved or equivalent).

**Desirable**

- Degree in Psychology/Social Sciences or other mental health qualification.

### Personal Qualities

**Essential**

- Possesses Empathy, Good Interpersonal skills and Time management. Ability to travel as required

### Skills, Ability and Knowledge

**Essential**

- Able to explain theoretical core principles underpinning counselling / Psychotherapy modality the postholder is trained in. Ability to facilitate change by creating a therapeutic relationship with an emphasis on empathy and collaboration.
- Ability to communicate effectively both written & verbal. Presention skills, Willingness to deliver courses and teaching sessions.
- Competent use of information technology, including keyboard skills, word-processing, e-mail, and relevant software for clinical information systems.

**Desirable**

- Demonstrable/ willingness to undertake specific skills and training needs appropriate to working in Occupational Health Knowledge of the role of an Occupational Health Department
