This is a specialist breastfeeding role the Post holder will:

- Actively promote breast feeding and participate in the training of both the parents and professionals on the neonatal unit.
- Be a specialist in breast feeding, acting as a resource for the multidisciplinary team and act as a role model in the clinical area.
- Oversee and manage the stock control of donor breastmilk ensuring it is handled in line with NICE guidelines and local policy.
- UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative: Actively support the  Unit achieve BFI status participating,  supervising, and facilitating the training of multidisciplinary team staff including, student nurses, student midwives, and health care support workers.
- Actively support women with establishing and maintaining milk supply and breastfeeding.
- Engage in and support staff and families with prescribed specialist nutritional interventions.

### Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job King’s College Hospital is at the forefront of academic and nursing excellence and is offering an opportunity to work at one of its two sites that provide neonatal care in South East London and Kent. The Neonatal Units that cover both sites are renowned for their specialist services; and need to recruit an enthusiastic Breast Feeding Advisor  to work alongside our hard working nursing teams.

The Neonatal Unit at Denmark Hill is a Level 3 care provider. As well as being a referral unit for premature babies, we accept specialist referrals for abdominal, neurological and eye surgery and for the world-wide celebrated liver service at King’s. We work hand in hand with the internationally renowned Harris Birthright Centre to deliver highly specialised care to vulnerable newborns and holistic care to the family.

We need an experienced breast feeding advisor to help provide baby care, participate in parent education and support breast feeding practices. Applicants must be hold a food hygiene certificate.  We are working closely with our maternity department towards achieving UNICEF Baby Friendly status

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

They will actively promote breast feeding and participate in the training of both the parents and professionals on the neonatal unit.

- This will entail being a specialist in breast feeding, acting as a resource for the multidisciplinary team.
- The post holder will oversee and manage the stock control of donor breastmilk ensuring it is handled in line with NICE guidelines and local policy.
- The post holder will support, supervise, and facilitate the training of multidisciplinary team staff including, student nurses, student midwives, and health care support workers.
- The post holder will actively support women with establishing and maintaining milk supply and breastfeeding.
- To act as a role model in breast feeding in the clinical area.
- The post holder will help to provide a quality family centred and supportive environment where parents/carers can learn to care for their babies.
- To maintain own personal development with support.
- To be a safe and effective practitioner able to provide high quality breastfeeding support to mothers.
- The post holder will participate in clerical duties and general administrative duties related to infant feeding.
- Accountable to breastfeeding team and Senior sister.
- Particular emphasis is put at Kings on the need to ensure that all staff recognise their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
- To provide a professional image at all times and be accountable for own clinical practise.
- To ensure documentation of care is in accordance with Trust guidelines.
- To ensure confidentiality at all times, only relating confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity.
