Job Summary

It takes all types of people to help save and improve lives. As a Blood Donation Team Assistant, youll play an important part in delivering a positive experience for our donors and supporting our donation teams across a variety of session locations.

Youll help care for donors after they have donated, prepare refreshments, make appointments and maintain accurate records, while helping to ensure sessions run safely and efficiently. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a service that makes a real difference every day.

Youll receive full training and ongoing support to develop new skills in a team environment where caring for donors, maintaining quality standards and delivering excellent customer service are at the heart of everything we do.

### Main duties of the job

Make a meaningful contribution to the donor experience by providing excellent care and customer service in the post donation recovery area.

Support donors throughout their visit by preparing and distributing refreshments and maintaining close observation following donation.

The role will require you to be available on a bank to work variable hours and days, including evening shifts, weekends and bank holidays with appropriate notice.

Blood collection takes place in a variety of locations, requiring you to undertake journeys in our vehicles or in your own vehicle for up to 2 hours.

You will be required to load, unload, assemble and dismantle equipment on a daily basis including heavy objects of up to 13 kgs.

Help create a safe environment for donors, colleagues and visitors by maintaining high standards of health, safety and infection control.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- To work in accordance with national clinical and quality guidelines including guidelines from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations and the European clinical guidelines to continuously monitor standards and maximise blood safety, following collection instructions and technical clinical instructions.
- Be aware of statutory child health and vulnerable adult procedures, and statutory local guidance and onward referral criteria.
- Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintain documentation and monitor and maintain equipment within your area of responsibility.
- Follow policies and standard operating procedures including disposal of clinical waste.

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- To be able to communicate effectively with donors, the public and staff, recognising when issues/events need to be referred.
- Make donor appointments using session computer.
- Prepare and distribute refreshments to donors.
- Provide a high standard of customer service and care to donors post donation.
- Understanding of a number of routine work procedures gained through induction and training, including manual handling, maintenance of equipment, Expectations of high customer service including dealing with complaints.
- To be able to aid back pod support in packing tasks when required.
- Use the computer and other equipment safely.
- Identify report and manage potential risks that you see in relation to donor safety, blood safety, staff safety and working/session environment.

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- Required to undertake specific Team Assistant induction, Adverse Events training and on the job training to achieve proficiency as a Team Assistant.

### Physical and Working Requirements

**Essential**

- The working conditions on mobile sessions provide unique challenges in that staff may be called to work in a different venue each day with limited influence over immediate physical environments and the daily necessity to load/unload, assemble and dismantle equipment, including heavy objects.
- There is a frequent requirement for sitting or standing for a substantial period of time.
- The post holder will be expected to undertake lifting and handling of items? with and without the use of mechanical aids, in accordance with appropriate Health and Safety regulations.

- To provide a high standard of customer service and care to donors post donation.
- Expectations of high customer service including dealing with complaints.

**Essential**

- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each donation environment so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards.
- Assist donors and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures.
- Ensure information concerning donors, customers and other members of staff is treated as confidential.
- Ensure that session consumables e.g. refreshments and clinical stock etc, is appropriately and securely maintained.
- Maintain health, safety and security in session areas, taking steps to safeguard donor’s belongings, and NHSBT equipment.

- To provide support, with indirect supervision, to the Blood Donation Teams.
