## Job Content

### Job overview

The Department is UKAS accredited. It serves a population of around 410,000 but has a wider catchment area. It provides a full range of analytical services to the Royal Wolverhampton NHSTrust and Cannock and Woverhampton CCGs producing approximately 6 million test results per year.

The laboratory moved into a new state of the art laboratory in early 2013 equipped with new analysers and pre-analytical systems linked by an automated sample track.

Consideration may be given to newly state registered Biomedical Scientists or students approaching state registration with Clinical Chemistry experience.

Consideration will be given to trainee Biomedical Scientist applicants.

### Main duties of the job

Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by the application of automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques.

Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones. Investigations include for example, liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests.

As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that will achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care. They will be expected to work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all of the diagnostic sections of the laboratory performing the work to the required standards. The department is divided into Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections with each section being organised and managed by a Section leader. The post holder will rotate through the various sections whilst maintaining an up to date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current working practices within the diagnostic laboratory.
