The Role

- Process a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Biochemistry using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples.
- Provides advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales.
- Responsible for own work and uses specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
- Acts as a mentor to less experienced Biomedical Scientists and participates in training /supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

The working pattern for this role is Various Shifts - Backshifts, Nightshift and Weekends

Applicants who do not meet the essential criteria will be considered under the Annex 21 training programme, where whilst undergoing training, they will be paid a % of the top of Band 5 and on completion of training will then move on to Band 6 scale.

In this key role, you will:

- Adherence to policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work in accordance with Departmental, Directorate, Hospital and regulatory requirements. These would include the following:
- Validates and authorises clinical laboratory results, issuing reports/results to service users e.g. clinicians. Recommending further tests/actions when required with referral to more senior staff /Consultant as appropriate.
- Participates in the evaluation and implementation of new equipment and analytical procedures
- Daily instrument testing, first line maintenance, repair, technical fault finding and performance of quality control on a daily basis for equipment for own use and for other staff to operate.

Adherence to policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work in accordance with Departmental, Directorate, Hospital and regulatory requirements. These would include the following:

- BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for Health Professions Council registration.
- Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
- Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
