Are you looking for an exciting new challenge and the opportunity to be part of a developing and innovative pathology service?

As part of this development, we are creating a new Biomedical Science Assistant workforce within the Pre-Analytics department at the Northern General Hospital. This newly formed team will play a key role in supporting the future delivery of Blood Sciences services, providing a flexible, skilled workforce across our modern, UKAS-accredited laboratory.

We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic individuals who want to be part of this exciting journey, helping to shape a new way of working and supporting continuous improvement across Laboratory Medicine.

As a Biomedical Science Assistant, you will play a crucial role in the patient pathway by supporting the receipt, preparation and processing of patient samples. Duties include sample reception, front-of-house laboratory reception, interaction with patients and service users, scanning and electronic record management, data entry, sample handling and supporting scientific staff to deliver a safe and efficient diagnostic service.

Please note: This post forms part of a 24/7 laboratory service. Successful candidates will be required to participate in a full 24-hour, 7 day working rota, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays to meet the needs of the service.

### Main duties of the job

Receipt, preparation, processing and distribution of patient samples in accordance with departmental procedures.

Providing front-of-house laboratory reception support, acting as a professional first point of contact for patients, visitors, healthcare professionals and service users.

Undertaking administrative duties associated with the laboratory pathway, including accurate data entry, scanning of documentation, electronic filing and maintaining laboratory records.

Using laboratory information systems to support accurate sample tracking and processing.

Supporting scientific staff in routine laboratory activities.

Responding appropriately to telephone and face-to-face enquiries.

Identifying and escalating issues such as sample acceptance problems or non-conformities in line with procedures.

Storing, retrieving and disposing of biological material safely and appropriately.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy

**Desirable**

- Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
- Previous NHS laboratory experience
- Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above or Level 2 qualification e.g. NVQ, Apprenticeship, or some laboratory experience

### Personal Qualities

- Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work

### Skills and Knowledge

- Keyboard and basic IT skills
- Effective Communication skills, written and oral
