### JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Residential and Supported Living Senior Care and Support Worker

LOCATION: Learning Disability Residential & Supported Living Services

BAND: 5

REPORTS TO: Residential & Supported Living Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Service Manager

Job Summary / Main Purpose

Working as part of a team which provides care and supports adults with a Learning Disability in the area of accommodation and social care. Working with people with a learning disability is one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Getting to know people with a learning disability can take time, patience and a high level of empathy so these are important personal characteristics for each candidate.

Discovering the things that people with a learning disability enjoy and building relationships with them, will be an integral part of the role. Candidate's personal attributes should include values of sensitivity, person centred care, respect and understanding of people with a learning disability.

In keeping with the changing needs of service users you will be required to work appropriate shift patterns, on a 24hr - 7 days a week basis. This includes weekend working, sleep-in duties and waking night duties. To support you in delivering the appropriate person centred care you will receive both an induction and ongoing training to encourage appropriate skill development.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following, the postholder will;

Act as a key worker to a number of service users and be responsible for devising and coordinating person centred plans.

Undertake the personal care needs, which include intimate care and the administration of medicines.

Undertake all direct care of service users which involves ensuring that their social, emotional, health, educational, spiritual and physical needs are met as fully as possible. Direct care may include daily living skills and household tasks.

Assist with the care and support of all service users, including those with complex needs e.g. challenging behaviour, mental health, physical disability in the learning disability programmes residential, supported living and respite services.

Work in a person centred way, committed to exploring and seeking out opportunities and activities for service users that enhance their quality of life.

Work as a member of the team committed to a high standard of effective communication.

Contribute to a positive working environment.

Liaise with carers/families, other agencies, local community and multi-disciplinary teams.

Regularly monitor and review person centred plans and be flexible and sensitive to adapting the plan to meet changing needs.

Participate in training opportunities, which includes all mandatory training and RQF Level 3 in Health & Care (if not previously obtained).

Undertake responsibility, on a rota basis, for the supervision of the service and for deciding the action to be taken in relation to service users and staff.

Supervise Band 3 staff and complete necessary documentation as delegated.

Maintain accurate and up to date records and reports. Attend meetings and reviews as required.

Adhere to all Trust Policies and Procedures.

Advocate on behalf of the service users and to encourage self-advocacy.

Promote equality of opportunity and good relations as outlined in the Trust's Equality Scheme.

Medication

Support service users with the safe handling, administration and recording of medication.

Financial

Ensure strict adherence to the Trust's financial procedures and policies in regards to all financial matters and report any discrepancies to the line manager.

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognises the key principle that "Cleanliness matters is everyone's responsibility, not just the cleaners" Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

This includes:-

Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO '5 moments');

Using the correct '7 step' hand hygiene technique;

Being 'bare below the elbows' when in a clinical environment;

Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);

Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);

Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;

Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;

Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.

### PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

NVQ/QCF/RQF Level 2 in Care (or equivalent qualification in care).

OR

A professional qualification i.e. Diploma in Social Work, Registered Nurse for People with a Learning Disability.

Allied Health Professional.

Hold a current registration with NI Social Care Council, either as a social care worker or professional social worker, or be eligible to apply for same or registration with other professional body.

3 years' experience of delivering care and support in a professional capacity in a residential, supported living, day services or hospital for people with a learning disability or learning disability children's services setting.

Willingness to undertake Trust two week Induction Programme prior to work placement.

Willingness to undertake RQF Level 3 in Care (if not already achieved).

Shortlisting by Application Form

Be able to work flexible hours including evenings, night duty, sleep in duties, weekends and bank holidays as required.

Ability to communicate clearly in writing and speech.

An understanding of the issues involved in supporting an individual with a learning disability within a community environment.

Interview

Experience of working with adults with a learning disability in a Residential and/or Supported Living environment.

Experience of working with individuals who may display challenging behaviours.

### NOTE

Where educational/professional qualifications form part of the criteria you will be required, if shortlisted for interview, to produce original certificates and one photocopy of same issued by the appropriate authority. Only those certificates relevant to the shortlisting criteria should be produced. If educational certificates are not available an original letter and photocopy of same detailing examination results from your school or college will be accepted as an alternative.

If successful you will be required to produce documentary evidence that you are legally entitled to live and work in the United Kingdom. This documentation can be a P45, Payslip, National Insurance Card or a Birth Certificate confirming birth in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. Failure to produce evidence will result in a non-appointment.

Where a post involves working in regulated activity with vulnerable groups, post holders will be required to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
