### JOB DESCRIPTION

Post: Early Years Supervisor

Location: 124 Stewartstown Road BT11 9JQ

Grade: Band 4

Reports to: Early Learning Coordinator

Responsible to: Project Coordinator

Hours: 20 hrs per week

### Job Summary

The Surestart management, to whom the supervisor is responsible, will lay out the overall policies and procedures of the project. Within the terms of these policies, the supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day running of childcare programmes and ensuring that there is a safe, caring and welcoming environment for children and their families.

Key Responsibilities

1. The supervisor is responsible for the overall safety and well being of the children within the childcare programmes and for implementing the quality standards laid out by the Department of Education, Department of Health, Social Services & Public Safety; and the Sure Start Management Committee.

2. To work in conjunction with the Outerwest SureStart and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust policies and procedures.

3. The supervisor is responsible for calling regular staff and planning meetings in order that staff will be fully aware of their roles and the progression of play.

4. The supervisor is responsible for the support and supervision of staff, students and volunteers in the setting.

5. In consultation with the staff at meetings, the supervisor should ensure that planning and preparation is carried out and that the activities offered throughout the session allow the children to experience appropriate play activities for their age and stage of development.

6. The supervisor should ensure that the setting complies with health and safety requirements, is fully set out before the session commences and is tidied up after the session ends.

7. The supervisor, in conjunction with other staff members, will carry out regular observations and make assessments of each individual child’s needs within the group and plan to meet these needs. The supervisor will listen to, encourage, stimulate and enable all the children as appropriate.

8. The supervisor is responsible for keeping up-to-date records as stipulated by Social Services, Department of Education and the requirements of the management of the group.

9. The supervisor will encourage the active participation of all parents in the group, ensuring they are kept fully informed of their child’s overall development within the group.

10. The supervisor will attend relevant ongoing training courses and meetings as required; these may take place outside of usual working hours i.e. evenings and weekends.

11. The supervisor will contribute to the development and delivery of early years programmes.

12. The supervisor will take part in, and help with the organisation of special events, outings and visits.

13. The supervisor will give a report to the Early Learning Co-ordinator of the Sure Start Project and may be required to give reports to the Management Committee. The supervisor will assist the Early Years Co-ordinator in the induction of new staff.

14. The supervisor should bring to the attention of the management any matter for which it is responsible. The supervisor should abide by the confidentiality policy of the Project.

15. The supervisor will be responsible for maintaining the first aid box and spills kit in the setting. Ensuring equipment is replenished and safe to use.

16. Keep up-to-date records i.e. daily register of attendance, an accident book, a plan of group activities, records required by social services, D.E. and SureStart. Keeps a waiting list admitting children when vacancies occur in keeping with Sure start’s policies.

### Records Management

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognizes the key principle that “ Cleanliness matters is everyone’s responsibility, not just the cleaners” Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff. This includes:-

- Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO ‘5 moments’);
- Using the correct ‘7 step’ hand hygiene technique;
- Being ‘bare below the elbows’ when in a clinical environment;
- Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);
- Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
- Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;
- Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;
- Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.
