Speech and Language Therapist – Band 6

Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm, or 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday Contract: Temporary Band: Band 6 Service: Adult Speech and Language Therapy

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join our adult Speech and Language Therapy team on a temporary basis.

The successful candidate will provide assessment and intervention for adults with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties, working collaboratively with patients, carers, care staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.

### Main duties of the job

- Undertake assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review of adults with communication and swallowing disorders, using evidence-based practice and relevant professional guidelines.
- Assess and manage dysphagia, including specialist oral motor and swallowing assessments.
- Provide clear, clinically appropriate recommendations to support safe eating, drinking and medication administration.
- Use appropriate assessment and treatment approaches, including relevant standardised assessments.
- Provide education, advice, support and training to patients, carers, care staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Eating and Drinking with Acknowledged Risks (EDAR) and its application within clinical practice.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with professional and organisational requirements.
- Manage and prioritise a clinical caseload effectively, ensuring appropriate follow-up and review.
- Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and safe, effective service delivery.

- Ability to assume leadership responsibilities
- Comfortable addressing difficult issues e.g. limited rehab potential; complex condition-related information to patients’ families/carers

- Able to demonstrate initiative and innovative approaches towards work.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Recognised SLT degree
- Registration with Health & Care Professionals Council
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Completion of dysphagia competencies
- Experience of working in a variety of adult clinical settings within the UK/NHS
- Experience of working and liaising with other MDT professionals
- Ability to understand complex issues, problem solve and propose solutions
- Able to communicate with patients in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures
- Experience of supervising/ managing junior staff and students
- Experience working with adults from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- Independent management of dysphagia caseload

**Desirable**

- Evidence of relevant post-registration education and training e.g. in Stroke, Supervision
- Member of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network
- Experience of working with a community SLT service
- Experience of establishing competencies and a training programme for junior staff
- Experience of working with adults requiring tube feeding
- Participation in audit; research projects; service development

### Skills and Knowledge

**Essential**

- In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions and evidence of a specialist level of clinical expertise in relevant areas
- Good understanding of the principles of clinical governance and audit
- Ability to use IT including PowerPoint, Excel, Word
- Highly developed negotiation and problem-solving skills
- Ability to identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others
- Ability to listen effectively and provide constructive feedback to patients and colleagues.
- Awareness of the management and use of data in the NHS setting

**Desirable**

- Postgraduate research in a relevant area.
