BANK Sonographer - Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, UHB NHS TRUST

As a bank Sonographer at Heartlands Hospital Birmingham, you will perform high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations critical to the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients across diverse clinical specialties.

Utilizing the latest sonographic machines, you will acquire and interpret detailed images of a variety of ultrasound exams according to your skill set, ensuring precision and diagnostic accuracy.

You will prepare and position patients, provide clear procedural explanations, and maintain strict adherence to hospital protocols and infection control standards. Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to patient care plans by providing timely, accurate diagnostic ultrasound reports. Your role demands expert knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and sonographic principles, alongside professional certification and commitment to continuous professional development.

This position is pivotal in supporting clinical decision-making and enhancing patient outcomes in a fast-paced, tertiary care setting.

You will be part of a department known for using the latest technology, supporting staff development, and providing caring patient services in a positive and innovative environment.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder must have relevant NHS experience in ultrasound as they will be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised clinical ultrasound service, ensuring effective patient treatment and diagnosis. The post holder must demonstrate compassionate patient care during all patient contact through the service.

They will be responsible for managing and prioritising workload and to produce comprehensive independent reports. The post holder will work within professional boundaries to improve patient outcomes and take part in the training of others in the specialised field of ultrasound.

In addition to the delivery of the ultrasound service, the post holder will be responsible for

* Training and development of appropriate staff in all aspects of clinical service

* Development and implementation of U/S protocols

* Contribution to research and development

* Promotion of service and Imaging standards

* Participation in audit and research

Deliverables:

Accurate and detailed ultrasound images and reports delivered within set timeframes.

Clear communication of findings to clinical teams to support patient diagnosis and treatment.

Comprehensive documentation of patient information and scan details.

Contribution to maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-focused scanning environment.

Active participation in team meetings and training sessions to improve service quality.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- *Must have relevant NHS work experience in the range of ultrasound techniques which are required.
- *To possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner.
- *Highly specialist knowledge of ultrasound procedures.
- *An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.

**Desirable**

- *IT experience to use the necessary computerised reporting system and image recording system.
- *Must be prepared to assist with the development of the service and protocols.
- *Possess knowledge and understanding of the audit process.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- *Educated to degree level or equivalent, have a post graduate accredited qualification in medical ultrasound.
- *Must be state registered (HCPC or NMC) when eligible or Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT)

### Additional Criteria

**Essential**

- *Must be able to work independently and be competent to write a concise and accurate report.
- *Must be prepared to provide practical and theoretical training in medical ultrasound and take responsibility for countersigning reports for Clinicians, Midwives and Radiographers in training.
- *Must be prepared to continue with professional development to ensure a high standard of ultrasound examinations.
- *Must be able to work effectively in a potentially high pressured, emotive environment.
- *Must be committed to providing a high-quality US service.
- *An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.
