Bank - adhoc hours - 3 months duration

An opportunity has arisen to join a forward-thinking and expanding community adult speech and language therapy service. This role would suit and new or experienced band 6 with an interest acquired neurological disorders and service development.

Postgraduate training and experience in dysphagia and independent dysphagia management is a requirement of this post. You will have relevant experience in managing adults with acquired swallowing and communication difficulties.

Evidence of appropriate qualification and HCPC membership is essential. Driving/car access is an essential requirement for this post.

### Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities for the Band 6 Senior Speech and Language Therapist are to:

- Independently assess, diagnose and treat adults with complex communication, voice and swallowing difficulties.
- Manage and prioritise a complex community caseload, including triaging new referrals.
- Develop care plans, maintain accurate records and communicate recommendations to patients, carers and professionals.
- Use evidence-based interventions, outcome measures and AAC where appropriate.
- Work closely with the MDT and refer to other services when required.
- Support FEES provision and provide specialist advice or second opinions.
- Supervise students and junior staff, including line management and appraisal responsibilities.
- Contribute to training, clinical supervision, audits, service development and clinical governance.
- Maintain professional competence, safeguarding responsibilities and compliance with organisational policies.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Able to demonstrate a high level of competence in the management of communication patients.
- To be able to independently assess and manage patients with dysphagia
- To be competent in handling the emotional and psychosocial aspects of working with a complex SLT caseload in the community
- Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions for dysphagia and communication and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits.
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance.
- Knowledge of national policies and procedures. (relevant to the specialist client group) such as NICE, NSF and Disability Discrimination Act
- Current UK driver’s license/Car driver with access to own car for work purposes

### Training

**Essential**

- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Evidence of appropriate external and internal training as appropriate to specialism.
- Evidence of Specialist Dysphagia Competencies or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Completion of clinical supervision training.
- Previous FEES experience
- LSVT training

### Experience

**Essential**

- Substantial clinical experience with adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties
- Assessment, treatment, management of complex patients with progressive neurological conditions
- Experience of working with other professionals relevant to client groups.
- Experience of undertaking appraisal and planning CPD for less experienced staff.
- Experience of being involved in clinical audit/service evaluation/quality improvement

**Desirable**

- Development and delivery education and training packages.
- Experience of supporting patients with AAC provision.
- Experience working in a community based or outpatient setting
- Experience working with a specialist caseload (such as voice or stammering)

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Recognised speech & language therapy degree qualification or equivalent.

### Personal Qualities

**Essential**

- Good interpersonal skills/team work
- Knowledge of BHC
- Car driver with access to own car for work purposes
- - Good team worker, showing initiative and interest in taking on responsibility

### Professional Registration

**Essential**

- Health and Care Professions Council Licence to practice.

**Desirable**

- Member of relevant CEN(s).
- Registered member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
