### Main duties of the job

We are delighted to invite applications for a part time (0.4 FTE) Band 8a Specialist Dysphagia and Complex Needs Speech & Language Therapist to join the West Essex Speech & Language Therapy Service. We recognise that no two clinicians are the same and offer flexibility in caseload allocation, taking into account experience, professional development goals and proximity to home wherever possible. Staff wellbeing is a clear priority within our service, alongside ongoing skills development, reflective practice, and access to high-quality CPD. The dysphagia service supports a diverse population of infants, children and young people 0 -18 with dysphagia associated with complex medical needs, congenital and neurodevelopmental differences. The role offers the opportunity to apply advanced dysphagia skills within a holistic framework, working closely with families and carers to support safe, functional, and meaningful eating and drinking in everyday environments. We serve children and families across the West Essex area (Uttlesford, Harlow and Epping Forest), working in partnership with local communities, schools, and services to deliver responsive and accessible care.

Our Service

The dysphagia service supports a diverse population of infants, children and young people 0 -18 with dysphagia associated with complex medical needs, congenital and neurodevelopmental differences. The role offers the opportunity to apply advanced dysphagia skills within a holistic framework, working closely with families and carers to support safe, functional, and meaningful eating and drinking in everyday environments.

We serve children and families across the West Essex area (Uttlesford, Harlow and Epping Forest), working in partnership with local communities, schools, and services to deliver responsive and accessible care.

As part of an integrated service, we work closely with a wide multidisciplinary team. We routinely liaise with consultant paediatricians, community nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, health visitors. The role also involves liaison with external services. We are a supportive and collaborative team who value clinical excellence, curiosity, and reflective practice. We strive to create an environment where clinicians feel supported, valued, and able to develop their specialist skills while maintaining a healthy worklife balance.

This is a community-based post, with the majority of clinical work taking place in service users homes and across mainstream and specialist educational settings. It is essential that you hold a valid UK driving licence and have access to a car for work purposes.

The post holder will be responsible for:

- Leading on the development of the dysphagia service with paediatric dysphagia colleague
- Leading and supporting therapists and assistants working within the dysphagia team
- Line management of designated colleagues within the SLT team
- Providing highly specialist knowledge and skills within relevant clinical area

Ideal Candidate

- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree or equivalent (Post Graduate Diploma or MSc in Speech and Language Therapy leading to registration with HCPC)
- Health and Care Professions Council Licence to Practice (HCPC)
- Fully registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience, including significant relevant postgraduate experience of managing paediatric dysphagia
- Post graduate qualification in paediatric dysphagia
- Completion of RCSLT Dysphagia Competencies to Highly Specialist level, including competencies in assessment and management of neonates
- Evidence of extensive relevant post graduate training, internal or external, in specialist area
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of managing own caseload within area of specialism
- Experience of service development and project management, including developing protocols and clinical care pathways
- Advanced technical skills relevant to the specialist area of practice acquired through advanced training and significant experience
- Advanced clinical skills and knowledge relevant to the specialist client group including assessment, diagnosis and management
- In depth and expert knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the client group)
