An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work as part of a multidisciplinary team based at one of our hospitals in Birmingham. You will form part of an expanding Speech and Language Therapy service dedicated to supporting the communication needs of clients who present with mental health needs. Our hospital provide assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for service users with mental health needs.

As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively alongside colleagues from Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Nursing etc. A wide range of training opportunities relevant to the role will be available.

You will receive support by senior Speech and Language Therapists ensuring the successful candidate has the relevant skills work to within a mental health setting.

The post is fixed term for 12 months, no weekend working, flexible working requests considered up to 37.5 hours. Secondments requests will be considered.

This post would suit an applicant who has a genuine interest in working with adults who present with complex mental health and communication needs and would enjoy working in a dynamic environment.

### Main duties of the job

The role will be varied and include transferable assessment and intervention skills, planning and implementing evidence-based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using therapy outcome measures, provide advice to other professionals regarding the management of clients with communication needs, modifying materials, attending and contributing to clinical team meetings, report writing and completing administrative\\managerial tasks relevant to the role.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a range of skills including effective communication, organisation and time management skills, self-awareness, reflection, compassion, commitment and inclusion

Our hospital locations are Reaside clinic and Hillis Lodge which are secure units for men.

The successful candidate will initially enter a supportive probation period of six months.

The post holder must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist\`s is desirable.

**Essential**

- A recognised professional degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Relevant transferable clinical skills & experience at undergraduate /postgraduate level
- Experience/knowledge of clinical assessment & analysis of clinical information and identification of communication strengths and needs relevant to a mental health client group
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) \\ liaising with families as part of the MDT team
- Knowledge and understanding of the application of relevant SLT diagnostics, theoretical models, and approaches relevant to service users
- knowledge of clinical governance and its relationship to clinical effectiveness and service user’s safety and service user’s experience

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislative frameworks and policies relating to care e.g., Mental Capacity Act, Safeguarding, Consent to Treatment
- Experience of working in a dynamic working environment
- Some clinical experience of the presentation of communication needs associated to a mental health client group including neurodiversity
- Some clinical experience of working with clients who present with a complex mental health need in a inpatient or community based setting
