An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Specialist Occupational Therapist to work within the community Stroke and Neuro Service in Birmingham, to cover a period of maternity leave.  The purpose of the post is to deliver specialist assessment and treatment for patients being discharged from the acute trusts following a new stroke

The successful candidate will have a wide range of clinical experience across the stroke and neuro care pathway and an understanding of collaborative working across multiple agencies. They will have a passion for delivering pathways of care that meet both high clinical standards and the needs of individual patients and their families and carers.

In return, you will be working closely with existing stroke and neuro services and social care provision and voluntary sector,  have the support of a multidisciplinary team and have access to clinical supervision and peer support.

### Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist occupational therapy service to patients recently diagnosed with a stroke or neurological condition in a range of community settings using developed specialist practice underpinned by theoretical knowledge.

To be a specialist resource of information for health and social care staff, patients, families, carers and external agencies who may require advice, support and guidance in the management of stroke and neurological conditions.

To transfer individual patients’ ongoing care to other agencies as appropriate and ensure that the service provided is conducted in a professional, efficient and effective way.

To meet the service specification objectives and key performance indicators as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Provide a comprehensive specialist assessment of patients who are referred to the service, often with complex presentations, in a holistic manner using investigative and analytical skills.

Apply advanced clinical reasoning to devise effective rehabilitation treatment plans seeking guidance from the senior occupational therapist where applicable.

Delegate and evaluate treatment programmes to the appropriate team members/rehabilitation assistants.

Implement effective, evidence-based treatment using a variety of treatment approaches and evaluation of treatment using standardised outcome measures.

Record all activity and patient documentation on the RiO system using a mobile laptop device.

Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your professional activities, including working within codes of practice and professional guidelines.

Demonstrate physical ability to carry out occupational therapy assessment and interventions, including highly developed occupational therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.

Respond to unpredictable work patterns where there is a requirement for the post holder to concentrate at high levels for frequent periods throughout the shift, both during patient contact and when dealing with other elements of the role.

Be responsible as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant clinical caseload.

Manage and prioritise caseload independently.

Provide clinical supervision and facilitate reflective practice to junior team members and students.

Support band five occupational therapists, band three and four rehabilitation assistants and students with caseload allocation and management.

**Essential**

- Ability to work flexibly within a 7 day service that offers appointments between 8am and 8pm.
- Ability to be independently mobile to travel across Trust area
- Adaptable and willing to work cross-site where necessary between Community Stroke/NeuroTeam and Early Supported Discharge service.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Current HCPC registration
- Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent
- Evidence of recent Continuing Professional Development

**Desirable**

- Post graduate training related to neurological OT i.e. Introduction to The Bobath Concept Module 1

### Skills/Knowledge

**Essential**

- Good understanding of current policies/guidelines that are relevant to stroke services
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date, evidence based clinical practice within field of occupational therapy for stroke.
- Utilises and interprets standardised outcome measures relevant to stroke with support from band seven where necessary
- Demonstrates the ability to prioritise and plan daily workload effectively and independently.
- Ability to reflect and to critically appraise own performance
- Assists in organisation and provision of in-service training programme
- Ability to demonstrate individual and team responsibility in respect to Health and Safety
- Knowledge and application of HCPC’s standards of proficiency and chartered Society of Occupational Therapy’s codes of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
- Computer Literate
