### Job overview

West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre is a tertiary prosthetic centre, providing a full range of advice and prosthetic rehabilitation for all levels of upper and lower limb loss including paediatric services. The centre is also one of the Veteran service centres, providing an enhanced service to veterans who have lost a limb in the service of their country.

The service is delivered at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre and at two secondary centres located in Wolverhampton and Stoke–On-Trent, plus a small number of satellite clinics located across the region.

Prosthetic/ Orthotic Assistant Technician provides technical input to the Prosthetic/ Orthotic Service at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, and the satellite clinics.

The Prosthetic/ Orthotic Assistant Technician provides technical skills and support to ensure the highest quality Prosthetic/Orthotic Service is delivered to patients, through close liaison with the clinical and non-clinical team.

### Main duties of the job

Responsible for completing repair schedules in a timely manner as allocated by the workshop manager, working and communicating as an integral member of the clinical and non-clinical team.

Responsible for evaluating prosthetic/ orthotic medical devices, undertake equipment testing and prosthetics/ orthotics adaptations.

Communicates effective and concisely with the workshop/ clinicians regarding worksheets instructions on how to manufacture the medical device; advice/ supervision available from senior technicians.

Performs skills for analysing & diagnosing faults in complex medical devices which requires concentration on planned maintenance & dealing with fault on equipment connected to prosthetic & orthotic patients; advice/ supervision available from senior technicians.

The post holder must be fully conversant in the use of equipment within the clinical and technical environment that is used to treat patients and to manufacture and adjust prostheses,

### Experience

**Essential**

- Relevant experience of Prosthetic/ Orthotics (may include formal training)
- Relevant experience in a technical service of medical devices for patients
- Relevant experience of analysing problems and solutions

### Skills/knowledge

**Essential**

- Knowledge of Health & Safety and Risk Management
- Knowledge of manual handling processes for the management of loads, integral to the daily workflows
- Highly developed hand skills, where a degree of precision and speed are required, as well as good levels of hand, eye, and sensory co-ordination

**Desirable**

- Understanding of a wide range of modern servicing techniques, materials and processes
- Understanding of the range of componentry used within prosthetic/ orthotic services
- Working knowledge of the Medical Devices Regulations (UK)

### Personal qualities

**Essential**

- Highly developed hand skills, where a degree of precision and speed are required, as well as good levels of hand, eye, and sensory co-ordination
- Willingness to undertake all relevant training to meet the requirements of/ enhance the role

### Qualifications / training

- HNC Level 4 or equivalent
