## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- IBMS Specialist Diploma / ESHRE basic semen analysis course / ARCS training (or equivalent experience)
- HCPC Registered (or working towards)

**Desirable**

- IBMS approved BSc Degree

### ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

**Essential**

- Able to determine the adequacy of patient information and sample produced for analysis
- Able to accurately count sperm under the microscope and judge between normal and abnormal sperm morphology
- Able to take corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate a loss of performance of equipment or methods
- Able to work autonomously in performing and assessing the quality of a range of manual and automated techniques used in an Andrology laboratory
- Able to perform audits to a high level using documented evidence and analyse the results to produce audit reports
- Able to perform competency assessments to a high level and competency reports
- Produce monthly workload and turnaround time data for statistical analysis

### KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

**Essential**

- Extensive experience and competence at Biomedical Scientist AfC Band 5 level or above within the Andrology discipline
- Extensive knowledge and competence of examining seminal fluid samples, such as microscopic appearance and medical terminology
- Extensive knowledge of the different procedures / protocols and equipment used in an Andrology laboratory
- Knowledge of the UKAS accreditation process, ISO 15189 Standards & WHO Guidelines
- Evidence of current CPD to maintain HCPC Registration
- Ability to lead / manage a team
- Ability to work independently and self-motivate

### PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

**Essential**

- Responsible for the planning, management and prioritisation of the workload of a team within the designated area
- Responsible for planning and organisation of staff within their designated area, ensuring the effective use of staff, liaising with other colleagues as appropriate
- Independently create, maintain and review documents including SOP’s, risk assessments, training records etc. and when directed by Senior Staff.
- Efficient in using the different systems used within the department such as iDEAS and EPIC
- Able to maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases
- Uses Word, PowerPoint and other appropriate computer packages for the processing and distribution of information

**Desirable**

- Deputise in the absence of the other Team Leaders
