An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Highly Specialised Paediatric Sleep Physiologist to join the existing Paediatric Sleep and Respiratory Physiology team within West London Children’s Healthcare (WLCH).

This specialist Band 7 role offers the opportunity to work within a growing and dynamic paediatric sleep and long-term ventilation service, supporting infants, children and young people with a wide range of complex sleep and respiratory conditions.

Based primarily at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the role includes cross-site working across all WLCH hospitals, collaborating closely with Consultants, Clinical Scientists, Physiologists, Respiratory Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists and wider multidisciplinary teams.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder may lead a team and be responsible for providing an advanced standard of care to patients at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and within West London Children’s Healthcare, which covers a multi-cultural and diverse population.  The post holder may be required to supervise the work of other more junior staff and support workers. The post holder will assist the Clinical Lead in contributing to the planning, coordination, development and evaluation of the service. Together with other senior staff, you will act as a resource of specialist advice to the rest of the therapy service and other professions.

For therapy services where there is current weekend working, the post holder is required to work at weekends as part of their contracted hours of work once they have completed the relevant induction and achieved the required competencies.

- Clinical Practice
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care and undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
- To provide comprehensive and specialist therapy assessment and diagnosis for patients with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced clinical reasoning, evidence-based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills and specialist assessment techniques.
- To work both independently and within a team structure, demonstrating leadership to manage own and team caseload.  To efficiently manage a caseload and organise this effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
- To formulate and deliver an individualised and specialist care plan / therapy management programme based on advanced knowledge of evidence based practice, advanced clinical reasoning skills and a wide range of specialist treatment options. As a specialist clinician to provide a second opinion where required
- Leadership and Management
- To plan and organise time efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time. To be accountable for the designated area of work.
- To flexibly manage responsibilities for own complex caseload, service delivery and teaching commitments. To decide priorities for own work, balancing other patient related and professional demands and ensure that these remain in accordance with those of the teams as a whole.
- To manage changes in service and staffing, both planned and unpredictable, and support and facilitate staff with caseload management.
- To ensure that all staff within the team have appropriate support for their clinical practice and continuing professional development through team meetings, review, supervision, appraisal, training and development. To be a role model for more junior staff members.
- To assist with performance management of more junior staff, technical instructors, support workers and students as required.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- 2+ years’ experience working in a paediatric sleep and long-term ventilation unit in a band 6+ physiology role.
- 3 – 4 years’ experience working in a sleep physiology unit.
- Experience assisting in department management, including line-management of junior staff
- Experience assisting in department operational including implementing and maintaining departmental policies and procedures.

**Desirable**

- Experience in leading or contributing to departmental research projects
- Experience in assisting with the business development of the department

- Post graduate degree (Masters or equivalent) in physiological sciences, or equivalent.
- RPGST or equivalent qualification
- Registered Clinical Scientist (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology)

### Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

**Essential**

- Demonstrates strong theoretical knowledge of respiratory and sleep investigations, with competence in setting up, supervising, and interpreting paediatric cardiorespiratory sleep studies to AASM standards, including patients with complex needs or on long-term ventilation or oxygen support.
- Possesses advanced technical skills to independently troubleshoot and manage diagnostic equipment and long-term ventilation devices such as CPAP and NIV.
- Provides effective patient and carer support, including mask fitting, CPAP/NIV education, troubleshooting, and participation in ongoing annual reviews.
- Applies sound clinical judgement in complex situations, understands professional limitations, and seeks advice appropriately when required.
- Effectively plans and organises workload and patient scheduling, works both autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams, communicates complex clinical information clearly to diverse audiences, and demonstrates advanced IT skills.

**Desirable**

- Competent in the set-up, supervision, and interpretation of polysomnographic sleep studies in children to AASM standards
- Competent in performing and interpreting spirometry in children
- Ability to perform more complex lung function testing in adults and/or children
