### Job overview

We are looking for an approachable, flexible and motivated individual to join the Overnight Cannulation Team as an Acute Cannulation Technician.

You will be a key member of the clinical team working over night delivering high quality care to patients across the Trust taking bloods and providing venous access by inserting cannulas.

### Main duties of the job

Assist in the assessment of health care needs by undertaking assessment aspects that have been delegated by the registered practitioner and completion of care documentation.

To be skilled and assessed as competent in carrying out venepuncture and taking of blood samples (including labelling of samples) on patients referred to the Overnight Cannulation Service.

To be skilled and assessed as competent in carrying out insertion of Trust approved cannulas following approved Trust guidelines. You must be able to dispose of sharps safely and be aware of your roles and responsibilities when looking after cannulas.

To be trained and competent in the taking of blood cultures on patients being reviewed by the Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) and at the direction of the CCOT Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Supporting cardiac arrest team with venous access in emergencies.

To work in a physically challenging environment with high levels of moving and handling and physical activity where you will be exposed to blood and body fluids

- Ability to safely and efficiently prioritise tasks and escalate emerging concerns appropriately
- Trained and proficient in Venepuncture and Cannulation
- Ability to communicate effectively, with compassion, in a variety of settings and with people with varying levels of understanding
- Ability to use initiative effectively and safely, and to understand and act on limitations

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Understanding of policy and procedure relating to the role and scope of practice
- Understanding of infection control procedures and practices
- Understanding of requirements of the role

### Qualifications

- Reasonable academic level of English and Maths
- NVQ level 3 or willingness to work towards
- Venepuncture and Cannulation
